What is the function of the gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ that is located in the right abdomen and below the liver.  The main function of the gallbladder is to store the bile juice that comes from the liver and then transport it to a small intestine via the bile duct which helps in digestion.

When a person eats high-fat meals the bile is going to play a vital role in breaking them down. In that case when there is an issue with the gallbladder the flow of bile will be disturbed.  Moreover, when there is a formation of gallstones it will bring about severe pain in and around the area of the abdomen including back pain which is going to be a bigger trouble during pregnancy time.

In general, the gallbladder is considered to be a supportive organ but when a problem arises with it, it offers harmful effects rather than the benefits they provide.

Whether the pregnancy influences gallbladder health

When the women get pregnant there will be a series of hormonal changes inside the body and this is becoming a major reason for several health concerns.  Women are at higher risk of developing gallstones compared to men, especially during their pregnancy times.

During a pregnancy, the production of estrogen will be tremendously increasing. The estrogen leaves a higher cholesterol level in the bile than usual and also the contraction of the gallbladder is going to decrease as the baby grows in the womb. The reduction of contraction will make it difficult to let out the bile through the bile duct by the gallbladder.  This condition is called cholestasis during pregnancy.  In fact, cholestasis is considered to be an increased risk in women while they are pregnant.
