A rectovaginal fistula is an abnormal opening or connection between the rectum and vagina. It mostly occurs post-traumatic vaginal delivery and sometimes iatrogenically. Stool and gas from inside the bowel can pass through the fistula into the vagina. Patients usually present with leaking stool or gas through the vagina.
Low rectovaginal fistula- may be managed by primary closure with or without colostomy or in a staged manner.
High rectovaginal fistulas are managed by laparoscopic repair.
