How often do we come across a story of dramatic happening in real life where you see the pure act of love? We came across one recently.
One of our patients Mr. Murugan, was having a chronic liver disorder and consulted us when his ailment got the better of him. After initial diagnosis, our doctors found that he needed an immediate liver transplant.
His wife stepped forward ready to be the donor. Although after initial screening and compatibility tests, we found that the wife had certain medical complications which would restrain her from being the donor.
The search for the donor continued only to add up to this hopeless situation. Surprisingly, his 19-year-old daughter Nivedha stepped up to save the day. Seeing her father struggle in pain, the young hero volunteered. The family was worried about the daughter’s future and was very considerate about her age. Even when the family had given up hope and became reluctant, she put a firm foot down and argued her way to take the stage.
With her semester exams around the corner, there was a bit of a situation for her to recover in good health as early as she could. So, our doctors suggested hepatectomy operation with a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
The entire operation was planned methodologically and was systematically prepared in a short span of 2 to 3 days. The donor operation was carried out by just a 6cm incision between 7 am and 4 pm. Following it, the recipient transplant was carried out between 5 pm and 11 pm successfully. With our expert doctors and efficient minimally invasive procedure, the 19-year-old was back on her feet in just 4 days with no noticeable scars. She’s now doing great and is preparing for her semester exams.
The first-ever laparoscopic donor liver surgery in the country was done in 2017 by GEM. Now, we have achieved another milestone by carrying out this procedure in the youngest donor for the first time in Chennai.
